Maroma is a sustainable and ethical lifestyle brand based in Auroville, South India, founded in 1976. The brand began as a small initiative creating incense inspired by nature and has grown into a globally recognised brand offering natural fragrances, home essences, body care and wellness products.
Maroma’s story began with Paul Pinthon, a chemist by training, who started Maroma with a focus on creating high-quality natural incense while contributing to the development of Auroville. In the early 1980s, Laura Reddy joined the journey, bringing her creative vision, communication and marketing experience. Together, they helped shape Maroma into a brand combining craftsmanship, sustainability, ethical practices and community empowerment.
Today, Maroma offers a wide range of products for home, body and personal wellness. Its collections include incense sticks and cones, essential oils, aromatherapy products, perfumes, candles, diffusers, soaps, body oils, lotions, body butters, shower gels, hair and body care, face care and other lifestyle products. The brand also has its Encens D’Auroville range of fragrances and incense.
Maroma places strong emphasis on sustainability, ethical sourcing and Fair Trade. The brand became Fair Trade certified nationally through Fair Trade Forum India in 2010 and was certified by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) in 2012. In 2014, Maroma invested in 30 kilowatts of solar panels, helping reduce its energy consumption. Its products and production approach also focus on natural and conscious ingredients, with many products being vegan, cruelty-free and free from ingredients such as parabens and phthalates.
Maroma’s connection with Auroville is central to its identity. The brand describes its products as being inspired by the natural essences of the Auroville bioregion and crafted by a community of artisans. Its work brings together nature, craftsmanship, wellness, ethical production and community values, while making products for customers in India and around the world.
